Being impressed by Dave Asprey’s approach to Intermittent Fasting, I decided to try Bulletproof coffee (BPC). [I will be referring to Bullet Proof Coffee as BPC interchangeably in this article.]
Bulletproof coffee has become very popular among the Keto-loving family. Though I am not a keto person, this coffee has surely become my love lately. I do not follow any specific diet but I try to experiment with a variety of foods, diets, and exercises to figure out which one of them helps me perform the best.
Past 4 months I have been having BPC about 4 days a week (depending on how my work and workout schedule is). To be honest, I was a bit sceptical in the beginning. I mean who would think of adding clarified butter (oh yeah, that’s what they call Ghee in the west). I tried it a few times earlier but then left it. I just couldn’t like the taste enough to make it a part of my routine.
But after reading Dave Asprey’s Fast this Way, I started researching bulletproof coffee and found a recipe that totally worked for me. Or should I say, the recipe that made me love bulletproof coffee more than regular coffee!
Ok, wait. Before we get into BPC, let me quickly tell you about the connection between IF and BPC.
I have been doing Intermittent Fasting for a while and I see amazing changes in my body because of it. I will share my intermittent fasting experience in a separate article, but for now, let’s just quickly understand why I am taking BPC while doing IF, during my fasted state.
IF puts our body into ketosis through overnight fasting. Bulletproof coffee further adds and pushes us into deep ketosis.
Another reason how BPC helps in fasting is to make it easier to prolong our fast and make the last few hours of fasting, let’s say, less miserable.
What is Bulletproof Coffee?
BPC is basically mixing good healthy fats in your coffee. It definitely reduces hunger, especially if you are fasted. But that’s not the only benefit.
I have felt that my morning is extremely productive when I avoid taking any carbs and rather have BPC followed by a high protein breakfast. I can focus more without feeling sluggish since fat release energy slowly and controls your blood sugar levels in the morning.
I have known the benefits of bulletproof coffee for a long time. But I somehow never enjoyed the original BPC much to have it every single morning. But when I came across another modified recipe and tried it, I just totally fell for it.
Let me first share the original Bullterproof coffee recipe. After that I will also share my modified recipe. You can try both and see which one works for you.
Bulletproof Coffee Recipe
Here is the original Bulletproof coffee recipe. Now, the portion size I have given below is something that is enough for my mornings. It makes me feel good but not too full. You can definitely increase the portion sizes for each ingredient based on your body size and hunger level. But I would still suggest starting with the portions mentioned below.
- 1 teaspoon (2gm) coffee powder or 1 serving of brewed coffee.
- 1 teaspoon (5gm) of MCT Oil (medium-chain triglyceride oil), which is usually derived from coconut oil.
- 1 teaspoon (5-8gm) Ghee or unsalted butter.
Blend all the ingredients in a mug, I prefer a milk frother, as it just makes it easy and saves me from cleaning the blender every day 🙂
Bulletproof Coffee ‘Modified’ Recipe
I knew BPC is certainly something that can help me with my fasting but I was looking for a tastier version of it. And something that I can look forward to.
Thanks to Thomas DeLauer who I have been following for a long time and really look up to his research in the healthcare space. He himself is a believer in Intermittent Fasting and talks about the benefits of Bulletproof coffee.
Many thanks to Thomas DeLauer for introducing me to this recipe –
- 1 teaspoon (2gm) coffee powder or 1 serving of brewed coffee
- 1 teaspoon (5gm) of MCT Oil (medium-chain triglyceride oil), which is usually derived from coconut oil.
- 1 teaspoon (5-8gm) Ghee or unsalted butter
- Now the hero ingredient, 1 teaspoon (5gm) cocoa or cacao powder
- ½ or 1 teaspoon stevia powder
Blend all the ingredients in blender or in a mug using a milk frother.
Now just to add, Thomas has also talked about adding a few other spices to elevate bulletproof coffee. You may certainly want to experiment with them.
Vegan Bulletproof Coffee
If you are vegan or for some reason don’t like ghee, then here are the substitutes of ghee. Do not skip MCT oil as it’s the key ingredient of bulletproof coffee.
I personally haven’t tried them so I can’t assure the taste but if you are already consuming them being a vegan, then add them to your bulletproof and share your experience in the comments below –
- Cold pressed Coconut oil – Anti-inflammatory properties of this oil make it a great choice for our morning drink. MCT oil is a coconut oil produced but the chemical structure of the two is different.
- Grass fed butter – A more widely used option to replace ghee.
- Coconut butter – A much creamier version of coconut oil. Start with a small quantity.
- Almond Butter or Cashew Butter – If you are a vegan and not allergic to these nuts, then you can definitely add these to your bulletproof. Note that they will add a distinctive nutty flavour.
I am constantly researching and will keep updating the articles on VegFit based on your comments and questions.
Please share below your experience or doubts or questions regarding Bulletproof coffee.
